ACCOUNTING 1........................................ 41530013.... Grades 9, 10, 11, 12     10 points is designed to present the introductory concepts and procedures of double-entry accounting and the accounting cycle as applied to both service and merchandising businesses. 

ACCOUNTING 2........................................ 41530023........ Grades 10, 11, 12     10 points is designed to reinforce the accounting concepts and procedures learned in Accounting 1 and to further the students’ understanding and use of a variety of accounting procedures and documents.  Prerequisite:  Accounting 1.

COMPUTER KEYBOARDING................ 40530173.... Grades 9, 10, 11, 12     10 points will develop and use touch-keyboarding skills to enter and manipulate text and data using a computer keyboard.  This course is designed to teach basic keyboarding skills including alpha/numeric keys and symbols, gain knowledge of computer technology, and apply the features of Microsoft Word to format personal/business documents such as letters, tables, multi-page reports, and memos.  Students will also be introduced to the Internet.

BUSINESS INTERNSHIP............................ 48530190................ Grades 11, 12   5 points

BUSINESS INTERNSHIP.............................. 48530193.............. Grades 11, 12 - 10 points is an in-school, on-the-job training program in which students input data, file, use telephone skills, sort and distribute mail, and assist administrative and office personnel.  This course is part of the School-To-Career Program.  Candidates must submit an application, as well as participate in training sessions.  Prerequisite:  Approval of the Coordinator and Computer Keyboarding teachers and a grade of 75 or better in Computer Keyboarding.

BUSINESS MARKETING EDUCATION                                                                             is a cooperative education program with a partnership between the school and the business community that provides basic learning experiences in the distribution and marketing of goods and services.  These learning activities include marketing functions such as sales promotion, buying operations, market research and management.

The following fields of occupational instruction are included in the Marketing Education Program:  advertising services, apparel and accessories, automotive, finance and credit, food distribution, food service, general merchandise, hardware, building materials, home furnishings, hotel and lodging, banking services, insurance, personal services, real estate, transportation, retail trade and wholesale trade.  In addition, distribution or marketing has come to be recognized as a function found in a variety of occupations.  Open to all students.

MARKETING EDUCATION 1.................. 42330013...................... Grade 11     10 points is designed to provide students with the fundamental concepts, principles, skills and attitudes common to the fields of marketing and management.  Prerequisite:  Permission of the teacher-coordinator.

MARKETING EDUCATION 2................... 42430023...................... Grade 12    10 points is designed to provide students with the opportunity to develop decision-making skills through the application of marketing and management principles in small and large businesses, non-profit organizations, and service industries.  Prerequisite:  Marketing Education 1.

COOPERATIVE WORK EDUCATION............. 42430043............

is the practice of correlating classroom instruction (part of Marketing Education 2) with on-the-job training experiences.  This course is part of the School-To-Career Program.  Students are required to work a minimum of 15 hours a week in a paid position.  Prerequisite:  Marketing Education 1 and the approval of Teacher-Coordinator.

The Business Magnet Program is designed to prepare students who are interested in pursuing a career in business, such as accounting, information technology, entrepreneurship, and international business.  This program is part of Bassick’s School-To-Career Program, which gives students the opportunity to participate in the Business Education Tech-Prep Program.  Successful completion of tech-prep courses allows the students to earn college credit from Sacred Heart University toward an Associate of Arts Degree in Business.  The courses offered are enhanced business courses.
 
The Bassick High School Business Magnet Program is a four-year program.  It will provide skills necessary for a positive entry into the workforce of the 21st century.  The following is the focus of the Business Magnet:
 
·         Provide opportunities to develop leadership skills within the school and the business community.
·         Provide students with initial opportunities to experience authentic learning within the context of business and finance.
·         Provide supportive avenue for student transit to the world of work.
·         Provide eligible students with internships through related business, industry and community collaboration.

ACCOUNTING 3/AC101:  PRINCIPLES OF
ACCOUNTING 1 (TECH-PREP).............. 41510037..............
Grades 11, 12      10 points
is offered in conjunction with Sacred Heart University for three college credits.  Entrance into the course is on the approval of the instructor.  The accounting cycle, merchandising concerns, internal control, accounting systems, and accounting for assets are the areas covered in this course.  This is a one-semester, double period class, which is team-taught by staff from Bassick and Sacred Heart University.  Prerequisite:  Accounting 2.

Grade 12     10 points
is offered in conjunction with Sacred Heart University for three college credits.  It provides students the opportunity to explore the nature of the American free enterprise system and its business organizations.  This course is intended to give the student a broad overview of the functions, institutions, principles and practices of business.  This is a one-semester, double-period class, which is team-taught by staff from Bassick and Sacred Heart University.  Prerequisite:  Accounting 3/AC101.

COOPERATIVE WORK EDUCATION................ 42410043..........
Grade 12      10 points
is a program for business students who through a cooperative arrangement between the school and the employer receive academic and related instruction in school and apply skills learned to related, on-the-job training in approved business sites.  This course is part of the School-To-Career Program.  All students must be eligible to obtain working papers.  Students must be available to work each afternoon and must work at least 12 hours per week. The student will be paid by the employer.  The CWE-BE Coordinator will cooperate with the employer in the supervision of the students.  Prerequisite:  Students must be enrolled in Accounting 3, Business:  Its Nature and Environment, or Business Information Systems.

BUSINESS INFORMATION SYSTEMS/CS100 INTRODUCTION

is offered in conjunction with Sacred Heart University for three college credits.  It is a full-year, double-period class designed to provide students with hands-on experience in using and understanding word processing, spreadsheet, database, and presentation software.  Simulated practice sets and school-based projects are used to develop problem-solving skills in a realistic setting.  Prerequisite:  Computer Keyboarding, recommendation of coordinator, and a good attendance record.

BUSINESS LAW PART I (M)..................... 48510181................ Grades 11, 12     5 points provides students the opportunity to gain some knowledge of the law in relation to business to function effectively as consumers, citizens, and employees/employers.  Emphasis is not only placed on principles and rules, but also on the purpose and logic of law.

BUSINESS LAW PART II (M).................... 48510182................ Grades 11, 12    5 points provides students the opportunity to gain some knowledge of the law in property, property acquisition and forms of ownership, bailment, real property, leases, tenants and landlords’ rights and duties, insurance, wills, estates, benefits, and types of trusts to function effectively as consumers, citizens and employees/employers.  Emphasis is placed on principles and rules and the purpose and logic of law.

CISCO COMPUTER NETWORKING I (M)...... 48510203...... Grades 11, 12     10 points is a course designed to provide students with classroom and laboratory experience in current and emerging networking technology that will empower them to enter employment and/or further education and training in the computer-networking field.  Instruction includes safety, networking, network terminology and protocols, network standards, cabling, cabling tools, routers, and router programming.  Emphasis is given to decision-making and problem-solving techniques in applying science, mathematics, communication and social studies concepts to solve networking problems.  In addition, instruction and training are provided in the proper care, maintenance and use of networking software, tools and equipment and all local, state and federal safety, building and environmental codes and regulations.

CISCO COMPUTER NETWORKING II (M)......... 48510213......... Grade 12     10 points continues the work of CISCO Computer Networking I.  Prerequisite:  CISCO I and permission of instructor.

COMPUTER APPLICATIONS.................. 40510173.............. Grades 11, 12     10 points is a year-long course in which students gain hands-on experience in using and understanding word processing, spreadsheet and database programs.  Prerequisite:  Computer Keyboarding.
