Course Offerings   

MUSIC 1...................................................... 68530503.... Grades 9, 10, 11, 12 - 10 points is an exploratory course.  Students are given a variety of experiences to assist them to discover individual interests and talents.  The course of study includes music history, music theory, harmony, ear training, and music fundamentals.  Emphasis is placed upon the students becoming intelligent consumers of music.

MUSIC 2......................................................... 68530513........ Grades 10, 11, 12 - 10 points is a course where students are taught basic theory in combination with basic piano skills.  The course is recommended for students interested in studying not only piano but also any other instrument since it provides the necessary foundation of prerequisite music fundamentals.

MIXED CHORUS......................................... 68530533.... Grades 9, 10, 11, 12 - 10 points emphasizes two, three, and four-part singing. Vocal techniques via vocal drills and reading music are provided to develop the eye and ear.  The more interested and successful students from this group serve as potential candidates for membership in the Senior Choir and Vocal Ensembles.

CHOIR.......................................................... 68530543.............. Grades 11, 12 - 10 points is open to junior and senior students on a selective basis.  Students must demonstrate a high degree of vocal proficiency and musicianship and the approval of the instructor.  Since its major goal is the study and performance of choral masterpieces from various musical periods, students are given intensive training in the principles of vocal production, musicianship, interpretation, and the appreciation of music as it is related to musical style, literature, and history.

THEATER I.................................................. 68530773.... Grades 9, 10, 11, 12 - 10 points is a course that meets the needs of students interested in all facets of stage presentation.  The course includes acting, vocal music and the technical aspects of staging.  The course offers practical experience and performance preparation for all school productions:  plays, musicals, concerts, revues, and recitals.  Comprehensive workshops in drama, writing, reading, and production are included.

VOICE TRAINING....................................... 68530553........ Grades 10, 11, 12 - 10 points provides students interested in singing with opportunities for training through class and individual instruction.  Emphasis is placed upon the study of breathing, enunciation of the vowels, articulation of the consonants, and the pronunciation of words.  These elements are combined so that the students can exercise control of their vocal mechanism and bring understanding to their vocal development.  Recordings of trained voices are used to acquaint the students with solo song literature.

BEGINNER BAND........................................ 68530573................ Grades 9, 10 - 10 points provides an opportunity for students to learn to play a band instrument.  As a result of daily instruction, it is expected that the student will develop the proficiency necessary to permit eventual membership in the high school performing band.  Prerequisite:  Teacher Recommendation.

INTERMEDIATE BAND............................. 68530583.......... Grades 9, 10, 11 - 10 points provides an opportunity for interested students to continue their development of techniques learned in the elementary school instrumental program or in the Beginner Band class available at the secondary level.  The successful completion of this course will enable the student instrumentalist to become a member of the Advanced Band.  Prerequisite:  Teacher Recommendation.

ADVANCED BAND...................................... 68530593.... Grades 9, 10, 11, 12 - 10 points is the high school performing band.  This organization functions as a concert and marching band.  Membership is by teacher recommendation only and requires participation in all school, community and festival events.

ELECTRONIC MUSIC ................................ 68530703...... Grades 9, 10, 11, 12 - 5 points is available to all students at any level.  No previous musical training is necessary.  Electronic keyboard ownership is helpful but not required.  Students learn basic music theory and terminology as applied to the piano keyboard.  Students develop music-reading skills and learn how to create and orchestrate original melodies through the use of midi keyboards and computer sequencing programs.

REGIONAL CENTER FOR THE ARTS...... 68530805.... Grades 9, 10, 11, 12 - 20 points is a state-funded performing arts magnet program located at 510 Barnum Avenue, Bridgeport.  It provides eligible students professional training in dance, music, and theatre, generally beyond the scope of programs available through participating districts.  The program is open to students entering grades 9-12 in the public schools of Bridgeport, Trumbull, Fairfield, Monroe, and Stratford.  There is no cost to the student.  Small classes are destined to ensure a meaningful academic and artistic experience.  Students receive grades, written evaluations and credit toward high school graduation.  They may earn up to 3 credits based on approval from local school districts.  Colleges look upon centers, such as RCA, favorably when considering a student for admission into post-secondary arts programs.  Classes meet four days a week, Tuesday-Friday from 2:00-5:00 p.m. and transportation is provided by participating school districts.  The Regional Center for the Arts looks for potential as well as developed talent; therefore, any interested student is encouraged to apply.  Please call 386-6006 if you have further questions.
