Type 3 Collins Writing Assignment

 

 I.               Assignment Summary: Bassick High School has four career academies that sophomores must choose to participate in, beginning in their junior year. This choice is based upon your interests.  Your interests may have been sparked by the results of your college view interest survey, a part time job you have had, a subject that you are good at, a job shadow experience or just a gut feeling.  A career interest can also be the result of something that may have happened to you, such as being in a hospital, or any other strong experience that forced you to think about the kind of adult you wanted to become.  There are clues to your future everywhere.    Your are required to write a letter to Mr. Remy asking permission to be a member of the academy of your choice.  The academies, again, are:  Arts/Media, Business/Finance, Government/Human Services, and Science/Technology.  

  II.              Purpose:  The purpose of this letter is to demonstrate to Mr. Remy why you believe the
              academy you are choosing is the right academy for you. 

       III.            The Writer’s Role: You are a self-confident student who fully expects Bassick
                    High School to assist you in becoming an educated adult                      

 IV.            Audience: Your teachers and Mr. Remy will read your letter.

        V.              Form: Letter format

       VI.            FCAs:  
                    #1) Please provide a clear thesis identifying your choice.|

                    #2)  Provide 3 powerful reasons with explanations, supporting your choice.

      VII.     Procedure:

            1) Review this sheet

            2) Read “The 8 Connecticut Career Cluster” sheet and see how Bassick has
                included them in the 4 career academies. 

            3) Think about your interests and why you think they intrigue you.

            4) List them on a separate piece of paper (Type I).

            5) Choose a career academy that seems to capture your interest(s).

            6) Draft your letter.

            7) Read over your letter in a one foot voice and make any corrections you feel improve your
                letter, right on the original draft.

            8)  Submit your draft, incorporating all your improvements.
