Principal's Message

We pride ourselves on the high quality instructional program that we offer to all of our students. Our school program is based on the "All Student Construct" which means that our school mission is to meet the needs of all of our students. Teachers present instruction that requires students to purposefully use information and skills that are learned in daily lessons. Bassick students receive a rigorous education by engaging in learning activities that challenge them to demonstrate what they can do with what they know--on their performance--much as workers are evaluated in the workplace.

There are three prominent types of performance learning.

Project-based Assessment

All of our teachers utilize project based assessment in which students and teachers discuss the criteria for evaluating an assignment before, during and after students work on the task. The importance of this strategy is that students not only develop their skills and knowledge, they also develop the ability to evaluate the quality of their performance.

Portfolios

This year we are developing a school-wide program of student portfolio assessment. Students organize their assignments in a "working" portfolio and periodically select exemplary pieces for their "Best Works" portfolio, which will follow students throughout their high school careers. A key component of this strategy is that students must include a written reflection on why each "Best Works" piece is an example of outstanding work.

Exhibitions

Finally, we are beginning to institute school-wide exhibitions in which students demonstrate their proficiency in their classes through a presentation of some kind. Our first exhibition was our school-based science fair in which every science student completed a science fair project. During the course of the school year we will have many more exhibitions. This is a step toward our goal of a "Senior Project" in which students will demonstrate that they have met our graduation expectations by presenting and defending a project that incorporates the academic, social and civic expectations of our Mission Statement.

SMALLER LEARNING COMMUNITIES

For the future we will continue our creation of smaller learning communities within which students will receive more personalized education.

We will develop Career Academies within which students will participate in rigorous academic programs that prepare them for higher education at the same time that students are introduced to the world of work through career exploration activities, job-shadowing and internships.

We are dedicated to providing all students with the highest quality education to ensure that Bassick graduates are well prepared for success in the twenty-first century.
