2008 Theodore H. and Margaret S. Beard

Excellence In Teaching Awards

Jan Blevins was a 2008 Theodore and Margaret Beard
Excellence in Teaching Award recipient. During a ceremony on November 24, 2008, the
Foundation presented Jan with an unrestricted cash award of $26,000,
representing the largest teaching award for educators in Connecticut and among the
largest in the nation.

Nominated by peers, students, and parents, recipients of the Theodore and Margaret
Beard Excellence in Teaching Award are recognized as outstanding local educators
passionate about inspiring Bridgeport youth and promoting the value of education. They
exemplify professional excellence, a commitment to teaching and an ability to inspire
learning among students, colleagues and communities.

The Theodore and Margaret Beard Excellence in Teaching Awards represent a
partnership between the Fairfield County Community Area Foundation and Beard family. The
Award fund was established at the Fairfield County Community Area Foundation in 2002 by the
family of Margaret and Theodore Beard, former Bridgeport residents dedicated to
supporting public education in Bridgeport. Each year, the Foundation grants two awards
to Bridgeport public school teachers with a gift of $26,000 each.

Jan Blevins has been teaching English in the Bridgeport Public Schools for 18 years. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Education from the University of Connecticut and a Master of Arts in Education from the University of Evansville. She currently teaches English 12 and English HC101. As the Bassick English Department coordinator, Mrs. Blevins serves as a liaison between the Supervisor of English for grades nine through twelve and the teachers in the English department. Blevins also coordinates CAPT practice tests within the English department and makes sure all twelfth grade students meet CAPT graduation requirements. In addition to serving as English Department coordinator, has worked as a curriculum developer, professional development presenter, class advisor, and mentor teacher. Currently, Blevins serves as an adjunct professor of Humanities at Housatonic Community College.
