DEPARTMENT GOALS AND MISSION:
The goal of the ESOL component is to provide effective instruction for English Language Learners (ELLs) in acquiring English language proficiency and to promote the academic success of these students.
English language skills are developed through the content areas in correlation with the district's curricula objectives. In general, content ESOL classes have dual objectives: students work on both language and content.
The key characteristic of a Content ESOL lesson is to create activities that require the student to practice the English language. Content ESOL lessons present materials that are carefully prepared to address the linguistic needs of Limited English Proficient students. Activities are designed to promote active learning. Content ESOL is a delicate mix of language and subject matter. Communication about content requires higher order thinking skills.
The ESOL Department's programs components are aligned with Bassick High School’s Mission Statement. Lessons are designed to meet Bassick High School’s academic, social, and civic expectations for learners.
NEW ARRIVAL CENTER
The New Arrival Center is a component of the ESOL Program. It is designed to serve Limited English Proficient students who are 15 years or older, who have not completed eighth grade, and who have severe academic deficiencies. These students cannot function unaided in a mainstream classroom. The purpose of the NAC is twofold:
· to help students with low academic skills function, at first partially, and later totally, in the mainstream classroom.
· to provide follow up remedial assistance to those students who completed the NAC program and are enrolled in mainstream classes, but who are in need of tutorial help.
RECEPTION CENTER
Instructional services provide an upgraded/ multi-age program structure to meet the needs of at risk English Language Learners who:
· have not received formal education in their country of origin
· have repeated grades
· have interrupted schooling and consequently their academic placement is too or three years below the appropriate grade level.
In this program students receive instruction in all academic content areas, using the district's curricula both in English and native language. This approach enables students to transition successfully into the mainstream classrooms. The ultimate goal of the Reception Center is dropout prevention.
