Grades 10, 11, 12 5 points is a semester course focusing on foods, meal patterns and food preparation techniques of foreign countries. Some of the countries include areas of the United States, Mexico, China, Italy, Spain, the Caribbean islands, Africa, France, and Germany. Cultural similarities and differences of these countries are explored. Students prepare some typical ethnic foods. Prerequisite: A high school Foods course.
BAKING AND PASTRY ARTS................... 78530020.......... Grades 10, 11, 12 5 points is an advanced semester course for students who wish to expand their food preparation skills. Baking techniques and the art of cake decorating are the focus. Prerequisite: A high school Foods course.
CULINARY PREPARATION.................... 78530030.......... Grades 10, 11, 12 5 points is an advanced semester course that offers instruction in meal planning, preparing, serving, and entertaining for various occasions. Career choices and job success skills are addressed. Prerequisite: A high school Foods course.
CLOTHING CONSTRUCTION

10 points provides an opportunity for
students to concentrate on garment construction. Students construct three or
more garments, supplying their own fabric. Instruction includes consumerism,
design principles, use and care of fabrics, sewing equipment, use of a
commercial pattern, and career awareness.
CLOTHING CONSTRUCTION II............. 78530103........ Grades 10, 11, 12 10 points is designed for students who have mastered the sewing basics and want to advance their skills. Tailoring techniques are stressed in the actual construction of vests, jackets, suits, coats, and coordinated garments. Related in-depth study includes pattern and fabric selection, alteration, and custom fitting. Students provide pattern, fabric, and other materials to complete their projects. Prerequisite: Clothing Construction I.
HUMAN SEXUALITY................................ 78530121...... Grades 9, 10, 11, 12 5 points is a first semester course that gives students the opportunity to discuss concerns and problems or obtain factual information about sexuality issues. Emphasis is placed on effective communication skills, human relationships, responsibility and goal setting, decision-making and refusal skills. Topics covered include pregnancy, pregnancy prevention, sexual decisions, and sexually transmitted diseases.
CONTEMPORARY FAMILY.................... 78530122...... Grades 9, 10, 11, 12 5 points is a second semester course that focuses on issues relating to becoming a parent, skills, readiness, roles, responsibilities and rewards of effective parenting. Other instructional areas include infant care, developmental stages, discipline techniques, teenage pregnancy and pregnancy prevention. Community resources to meet special parenting needs such as children in crisis and abusive parenting behavior will be explored.
CHILD CARE SERVICES.......................... 78530185.............. Grades 11, 12 20 points is a double-period, full-year course that combines classroom instruction with community site participation in preschool and Kindergarten classrooms. Student interest and career goals should be considered as a basis for this course selection. Students must have the instructor’s permission to enroll.
FASHION MERCHANDISING 108/(TECH PREP) NON-TEXTILES AND FASHION ACCESSORIES 78532213... Grades 11, 12 10 points is offered in conjunction with the University of Bridgeport for three college credits. It provides in-depth studies of fashion accessories and non-woven consumer products and is designed to give students a realistic appreciation of quality choices in merchandise selection, performance standards, and consumer care. Students study background information and then design and create accessory items suitable for the current marketplace. Teaching staff includes Bassick High School teachers in the Consumer Sciences Department and a professor from the University of Bridgeport.CUISINE AND NUTRITION I................... 78530001...... Other areas that may be studied are Nutrition and Wellness, Meal Planning and Preparation, and Careers in Food and Nutrition. ELEMENTARY TUTORING..................... 78530453.............. Grades 11, 12 10 points is a course for students interested in a career in education. Students tutor elementary school children that may involve one-on-one tutoring, small group tutoring or other responsibilities relating to teaching students. Placement is based on counselor recommendation and an interview by the teacher.

YOUNG PARENTING II............................ 78530152...... Grades 9, 10, 11, 12 5 points provides onsite daycare for students who are accepted through an application process. Acceptance is based on need, recommendations, attendance and motivation. Students are accepted with a child up to one year of age. Students must work in the daycare for one assigned period per day and must complete additional class work. Attendance and schoolwork are closely monitored.
