DEPARTMENT MISSION:

The major goal of the foreign language department is to help students learn to understand, speak and write in another language, for personal enrichment and career choice.  Students will also acquire an understanding and appreciation of another people’s way of life and their contributions to our democratic society and to world civilization.  The department’s objectives are consistent with the school’s mission statement.

 

 

 

Course Offerings

FRENCH 1................................................. 51530013.......... Grades 9, 10, 11      10 points is an elementary course designed to develop effectively the four basic skills of reading, speaking, understanding, and writing.  The course also offers an introduction to the culture of France and French-speaking countries.  During the first year special emphasis is placed on communicative competency.

FRENCH 2.................................................... 51530023.... Grades 9, 10, 11, 12     10 points continues the four basic skills acquired in French 1.  Students also continue to study French culture.  Simple articles from magazines and newspapers are also introduced.  There is continued emphasis on communicative competency.

FRENCH 3................................................... 51530033.............. Grades 10, 11     10 points places emphasis on extensive reading, oral reports and composition, and continues conversation that was begun in French 1 and 2.  Basic grammar is reviewed and the finer points of syntax are introduced.  The study of French culture and stress on communicative competency is continued.

FRENCH 4................................................... 51530043.............. Grades 11, 12     10 points continues the extensive reading, oral reportS, composition, and conversation begun in French 3.  Basic grammar is reviewed when necessary and syntax is continued.  More emphasis is placed on French literature at this level.

FRENCH FOR FRENCH SPEAKERS..... 51530053...... Grades 9, 10                 10 points is designed to meet the needs of students of French-American heritage who were born in the United States or who came to the United States at an early age and possess little or no proficiency in reading and writing the French language.  Much time is devoted to the study of correct oral and written French.  Students are also given a general perspective of geography and French culture through selected readings from French and French-American literary works.

ADVANCED FRENCH/
FRENCH FOR NATIVE SPEAKERS......... 51530073.... Grades 9, 10, 11, 12     10 points
is designed for native speakers as well as students who show proficiency for language acquisition as demonstrated by their work in French 2.  Time will be devoted to the art, culture and literature of francophone countries including French-speaking Africa and the Caribbean.  Grammar review will be contextualized through the study of literature, history and the arts.

SPANISH LANGUAGE BILINGUAL......... 52040013.... Grades 9, 10, 11, 12     10 points is a course for Spanish-speaking students that focuses on the study of Spanish literature and culture.

SPANISH 1A............................................... 52533273.......... Grades 9, 10, 11      10 points develops basic skills in reading, writing, speaking, and comprehending.  Stress is placed on communicative competency.  The course also provides an introduction to the culture of Spanish-speaking countries.

SPANISH 2A................................................ 52533283.... Grades 9, 10, 11, 12     10 points is designed to provide for the continued development of the basic skills introduced in level 1.  Emphasis is placed on communicative competency.  Students read selections from literature and cultural topics that are used for oral and written expressions and for reviewing grammar as an integral part of a text.

SPANISH 3A.......................... 52533293.. Grades 10, 11, 12                               10 points is based on continued development of communicative competency skills with a review of grammatical structure.  One of the special aims of this course is the development of a strong conversational vocabulary.  Much emphasis is placed on reading literary works, which combine culture and literature.

SPANISH 4........................... 52530303..... Grades 10, 11                                      10 points is conducted in Spanish.  Review of advanced grammar is made whenever necessary.  Students read selected Spanish literary masterpieces of all periods.  Attention and stress are placed on expression of original ideas and oral expression through class discussions and guided composition.  Independent study is encouraged for those students who are capable of performing advanced work.

SPANISH 5 A.P. (Language)........... 52500313..... Grades 11, 12                        10 points  is designed for those students who have a good command of Spanish grammar and vocabulary; competence in listening, speaking, reading, and writing; and are interested in completing studies comparable in content and difficulty to a full year course in Spanish composition and conversation at the third year college level.  It is expected that students will take the A.P. exam in May, which may lead to college credit.

SPANISH FOR SPANISH SPEAKERS 1...... 52530333..... Grades 9, 10           10 points  is designed to meet the needs of students of Spanish-American heritage who were born in the United States or who came to the United States at an early age and possess little or no proficiency in reading and writing the Spanish  language.  Much time is devoted to the study of correct oral and written Spanish.  Students are also given a general perspective of geography and Hispanic culture through selected readings from Spanish and Spanish-American literary works.

SPANISH FOR SPANISH SPEAKERS 2...... 52530343 Grades 9, 10, 11, 12      10 points is a continuation of the work begun in Spanish for Spanish Speakers 1.

SPANISH FOR SPANISH SPEAKERS 3...... 52530353.. Grades 10, 11, 12        10 points focuses on advanced grammar and composition; proficiency in written expression is emphasized.  This course includes an overview of Spanish and Spanish-American literature, culture, history, and geography.

Note:   Students of Spanish-American heritage who are proficient in written and spoken Spanish may be placed in Spanish 3 or Spanish 4 with the written approval of the coordinator after consultation with the supervisor.
