PHYSICAL SCIENCE Honors M................ 11120013........................ Grade 9 - 10 points PHYSICAL SCIENCE Honors .....................11100013........................ Grade 9 - 10 points PHYSICAL SCIENCE A............................... 11133013........................ Grade 9 - 10 points is a course that serves as an introduction to basic principles and applications of matter, the properties and reactions of matter, interactions of matter, and selected topics from chemistry. The physics of motion and forces will also be covered in this course. The student also learns the basic principles of physics and Earth science. It is accompanied by the appropriate laboratory work.
PHYSICAL SCIENCE BILINGUAL....................... 11150013............ Grade 9 - 10 points is a course that serves as an introduction to basic principles of physics and earth science. Topics include work and energy, simple machines, light and sound, astronomy and processes that shape the structure of the earth. It is accompanied by the appropriate laboratory work.
BIOLOGY A............................................... 12233023.......... Grades 9, 10, 11 - 10 points is the study of living things and the life processes. It contributes to the general educational aims of the secondary school by giving the students an appreciation of the world of living things of which they are a part. It provides the student with an awareness of every day living. The branches of biology included are botany, zoology, ecology, evolution, genetics and heredity, microbiology, cell functions and phylogeny. It is accompanied by the appropriate laboratory work. Required for graduation. Prerequisite: Physical Science - Part I.
A.P. BIOLOGY/LAB..................................... 12500045.............. Grades 11, 12 - 20 points is equivalent to a college level introductory Biology course. It follows the College Board's A.P. Biology Curriculum. Students will be expected to do considerable independent learning because the breadth and depth of the content, the kind of laboratory work, and the sophistication of the technology mirrors a college level course. It is expected that students will take the A.P. exam in May, which may lead to college credit. The class meets for a double period each day. Prerequisite: Successful completion of one year of biology and one year of chemistry with a final grade of 85 or above.
A.P. CHEMISTRY/LAB............................... 13500055.............. Grades 11, 12 - 20 points is the equivalent of the first year chemistry course generally taken in college. It follows the A.P. Chemistry curriculum outlined by the College Board and is intended to prepare the student for success on the A.P. exam. Critical thinking, analytical skills and problem solving are emphasized. Students should be prepared to do a minimum of five hours a week of independent study. A strong math background is helpful, and algebra skills are essential.
CHEMISTRY A............................................ 13500053.............. Grades 11, 12 - 10 points is designed to provide students with an understanding of the chemical world in which we live. This course stresses the relationship of chemistry to everyday life, analytical thinking and problem solving. It is accompanied by laboratory work and learning activities. At least thirty minutes of independent work is required each day for success. Prerequisite: Algebra 1.
A.P. PHYSICS/LAB...................................... 14420045.............. Grades 11, 12 - 20 points is the equivalent of a full-year college course. It follows the A.P. Physics curriculum as outlined by the College Board. This course supports and encourages the following broad instructional goals: Physics knowledge, problem solving, student attributes (disciplined study, curiosity, creativity and reasoned skepticism), and connections (to other disciplines and societal issues). Students are expected to take the A.P. exam in May, which may lead to college credit. Concepts studied include Newtonian mechanics, kinematics-statics-dynamics, work-energy theorem, linear momentum, circular motion, angular momentum, oscillations and gravity, Kepler’s Laws, thermodynamics, kinetic energy, electricity-magnetism, electro-statics, conductors and DC electric circuits, wave-optics including sound, physical optics, and geometric optics (lenses-mirrors). Laboratory work will include motion analysis, hologram making, flight models, rockets, trebuchet launchers, projectiles, robotics, solar-motion-devices, magnetic-levitation, amusement park rides, unmanned flight vehicle research (LAV). Prerequisite: Geometry concurrently with Algebra II or Pre-Calculus.
INTRODUCTION TO ASTRONOMY - Part I.......
1853017........ Grades 11, 12 - 5
points
is an introduction to astronomy. Topics covered
include ancient astronomers, the Copernican Revolution, Newton and Kepler, the
Creation of the Universe, Life in Space and the Tools of the Astronomers. It is
accompanied by the appropriate laboratory work. Prerequisite: One year of
science.
INTRODUCTION TO ASTRONOMY - Part II...... 18530172..... Grades 11, 12 - 5 points emphasizes our current understanding of cosmology. Topics include the Solar System, the Sun, Earth, Moon, and planets. Asteroids, comets and meteorites will also be studied along with stars, galaxies, constellations, and the current NASA space program. It is accompanied by the appropriate laboratory work. Prerequisite: One year of science.
ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE I - Part I............ 18530151......... Grades 11, 12 - 5 points combines basic concepts from earth and environmental science. Topics include a history of our planet through fossils and the rock record, mineralogy, plate tectonics and oceanography. Environmental studies include investigating the quality of our air, water and soil. It is accompanied by the appropriate laboratory work. Prerequisite: One year of science.
ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE - Part II......... 18530152............ Grades 11, 12 - 5 points examines the biotic and abiotic influences on ecosystems and the various factors determining the quality of life on earth. Problem-solving activities will focus on environmental health issues. It is accompanied by the appropriate laboratory work. Prerequisite: One year of science.
