What is Bassick School Based Health Center, otherwise known as Bassick Wellness Zone/Teen Health?

Bassick School Based Health Center is a comprehensive primary health care facility located onsite at Bassick High School. We are staffed by multi-disciplinary team of adolescent health specialists, including a nurse practitioner, social worker, outreach worker, medical assistant, Reconnecting Youth Teacher (a drop out prevention program) and we have dental services onsite one day per week.

We provide primary physical and mental health services to students enrolled at Bassick High School, that have a Parent Consent Form signed by their parents.

School Based Health Services are aimed at, but not limited to, students who do not have access to a family doctor, or whose families have little or no health insurance. SBHC’s are licensed as outpatient clinics or as hospital satellites, as outlined in the Public Health Code (Sections 19-12-D45 through 19-13-D53 or a hospital satellite license as outlined in CT General Statutes, Section 19a-493).

Our SBHC is not the same as the school nurse’s office. School nurses and SBHC’s work together and school nurses often refer students to SBHC’s because they are able to treat and resolve student health problems. All SBHC services are confidential. Parents must sign a Parental Consent Form for students to receive services. These consent forms must be updated yearly. An update is sent to the student prior to their consent form expiring.

 Frequently asked questions:

  1. Question: What children can receive SBHC services?

Answer:  Children with a current, signed Parental Consent Form.

  1. Question: Do SBHC’s distribute birth control?

Answer:  No; however, students requesting birth control are referred to local family planning agencies.

  1. Question: If one of my children is at a school that does not have a SBHC, can they receive services at the school if where there is an SBHC?

Answer:  No, children can only receive services if there is an SBHC at their school. However, during the summer, any child who will be attending a Bridgeport School in the fall can receive services.
